I wanted to share a very cool idea from my friend Jane who teaches guitar at a middle school up in Nebraska. She decided that during parent teacher conferences this year, that when students brought their parents to come discuss their grade – that they were going to do a bit more than just talk.
When students came to the music room, they were required (or should I say allowed) to play their parents one of the songs they are currently strumming in class. But it didn’t stop there! Students then taught their parents how to play the Em chord, and then played along with their student to a popular track. I asked Jane what kind of reactions she observed. ”[Parents] LOVED trying…and were so proud of their kids. Oh the SMILES on the parents and kids faces – priceless!”
